First, the battery. Cold cranking demands far more current, and most batteries fade after three to five years. Slow turnover on a frosty morning is your warning — have the battery and charging system tested before it strands you. Second, coolant and antifreeze strength: the same fluid that cools in summer must resist freezing in winter, and it needs testing, not guessing.
Third, tyres. Winter roads are wet roads, and tread depth is your grip. Check pressures too — they drop as temperatures fall. Fourth, wipers and washers: fresh blades, a full washer bottle with proper additive, and a heater-demister that actually clears the screen. Fifth, lights: with dark commutes both ways, every bulb matters — headlights, brake lights, and indicators.
Sixth, think about the human factor. Keep a blanket, a torch, and a phone charger in the car for long trips over the Port Hills or out past Darfield. Check the spare tyre is inflated and the jack is present. And slow down on shaded bridges and shaded corners where black ice lingers long after the main road has thawed.
